Return to player
RTP is a theoretical long-run percentage calculated over a very large number of plays. It does not tell you what will happen in one session, and a game with a higher RTP can still lose you money quickly.
Volatility
Volatility describes how results tend to be distributed: lower volatility usually means smaller, more frequent outcomes; higher volatility means larger swings. Neither makes winning more likely.
Using the information
Check the game’s own information screen, because the same title can be offered with different settings. Use these figures to understand a game, never as a strategy to recover losses.
Reading an RTP figure correctly
An RTP of 96% means that across a very large number of plays, the game is designed to pay back about 96 for every 100 staked, keeping around 4 as the house edge. It does not mean you will get back 96 from a 100 session. Over a single evening, results can be far above or far below that figure.
Some games are released in more than one RTP version, and the version offered can differ between casinos. Check the game’s information or help screen on the site you are using rather than relying on a figure found elsewhere.
What volatility tells you
Volatility, sometimes called variance, describes how wins are spread out. Low-volatility games tend to pay smaller amounts more often, so balances move gradually. High-volatility games pay less often but can produce larger wins, which also means longer losing runs are normal.
Two games with the same RTP can feel completely different because of volatility. Neither type gives you an advantage; volatility changes the pattern of results, not the expected loss over time.
Myths to ignore
A game is never “due” to pay out. Licensed games use tested random number generators, and each spin is independent of the last. Strategies that promise to beat slots by changing stakes or timing play do not change the expected return.
Bonus features, near misses and celebratory sounds can make a session feel more successful than it is. Use account history or any available session display to track your actual spending and returns.
Using RTP and volatility sensibly
Use RTP as one piece of information when choosing between games, not as a reason to play longer. Higher RTP slightly reduces the expected cost of play, and lower volatility can make a fixed budget last more evenly.
Decide your budget and time first, then choose games that fit, rather than choosing games and hoping the budget stretches.
Common questions
Where can I find a game’s RTP? In the game’s information or help screen. Check that the information refers to the exact game version you are playing.
Does a higher stake improve the RTP? No. RTP is the same regardless of stake size. A higher stake only increases how much you can win or lose on each spin.
Are live casino games covered by RTP? Table games have a house edge set by their rules, which can be expressed as an RTP. It varies by game and variant and, for some games, by the decisions you make.
